Play It Strange and RIANZ are proud to announce the winner of the Who Loves Who Competition.

CONGRATULATIONS

Hannah Horsfield from Kaipara College
for her version of Zowie’s song ‘Broken Machine’.

Hannah has won two days recording at Roundhead Studio’s Brickroom.

The Who Loves Who Competition has seen many entries come in fabulous versions of iconic New Zealand songs. From ‘Blue Smoke’ (the very New Zealand song recording), through to contemporary artists such as Avalanche City, Blindspott and Zowie. There have been a wide variety of styles applied to the arrangements – Jazz, Orchestral, Hip-Hop, Punk, and Acoustic Ballads to label a few.

The winner has been chosen by Chris Caddick (Managing Director of RIANZ). He also chose these awards:
Best Instrumental: Leonardo Coghini & Tyaan Singh from Kapiti College for ‘I See Red’
Highly Commended: Matt Cheriton from Kaipara College for ‘Gutter Black’
Highly Commended: Perry Langston from Kaipara …

Sumner School Year 4 student Jamie Evans has something to be proud of.

The eight-year old won the JuniorComp Primary School Lyric Competition, and New Zealand recording artist Annah Mac will perform her winning composition.

The lyric writing competition was open to all Christchurch primary students. It was part of the Weaving Hope Project, a collaboration between the Play It Strange Trust and Christchurch Methodist Mission.

Play It Strange CEO Mike Chunn says Play It Strange is delighted by the partnerships it has formed with the Christchurch Methodist Mission and the Ministry of Social Development. The initiative uses local musicians to bring fun challenges to primary school students to foster positive responses to the stresses of the earthquakes.

“We want to help young Cantabrians forge a positive outlook for the future,” he says.

The results are out for the 2012 Junior Comp Primary School Lyric Competition.

AUCKLAND CHRISTCHURCH

The competition has been run in South Auckland primary schools and Christchurch Primary schools for Years 1 – 6. Entrants were required to write lyrics to a song with the title ‘Proud and Strong’.

Annah Mac our songwriter judge had this to say;

“It is truly inspiring to see so many young people coming through this competition and writing such beautiful and honest lyrics,” Annah says. “All entries showed imagination and displayed great creative ability in the art of song writing.”

As well as Top 10 certificates there are participation certificate for all other entrants –   signed by Annah Mac! The winner in each centre has Annah visiting their school to perform the winning song.

Winner of the Olympic Songwriting Competition

Sam will be will heading to London where she will meet athletes and perform at an official New Zealand Olympic Committee function just ahead of the opening of the Olympic Games.

Play It Strange and the Christchurch Methodist Mission have collaborated in creating ukulele orchestras for Christchurch schools. They have also been working together on a number of other programmes including the JuniorComp Lyric Competition.

San Francsican ukulele star Uni and Her Ukulele began her week-long tour of Auckland primary schools on 19th March with a session at Sacred Heart Intermediate. Once the boys warmed up they rocked a version of Cee Lo Green’s hit song “Forget You” with Uni. The tour is being presented by Play It Strange and Cheese On Toast and also be visited Pasadena Intermediate, Mangere East School, Mt Roskill Primary and East Tamaki Primary as well as a stop at Starship Hospital.
