The 2013 Who Loves Who Competition is a chance for young New Zealanders to celebrate New Zealand music by recording their own interpretation of a New Zealand song.

This competition is open to all New Zealand secondary school students – so get your band, group, crew, ensemble, choir, combo, orchestra – any kind of musical collaboration together, or of course yourself as a solo act, learn and interpret a favourite New Zealand song with your own arrangement, and get recording. The song must have been recorded and commercially released in the past.

Music teachers – here is a chance to show your schools talent to the country.

The entries will be judged on originality and quality of performance, arrangement and recording. We are not looking for an emulation of the original recording artist but rather are searching for stars that shine with their own light. Think of all the advice that the judges of programmes like Idol and X Factor give contestants, and crank your own musical brilliance to ten. We want to rediscover the essence of your chosen song – through the filter of you or your groups talents.

Instrumental versions of a song will be eligible for entry. Instrumentals will have their own award category and at least one instrumental will make it onto the album.

The Top Twenty winning recordings will be mastered by Kog Studio and included on The Who Loves Who 2013 album which will be released for downloading during NZ Music Month (May 2013).

The overall winner will receive one days studio time at a top New Zealand recording studio.

The Enterprising Music Competition, EMC, is a joint programme for NZ Secondary Schools run by Play It Strange and the Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme.

Through the Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme, companies take to market original songs written by students from their school. They also have a chance to win the premium award, the ROCKSHOP ALBUM OF THE YEAR.

HOW IT WORKS
Schools form business units who;

- Select 6 – 15 songs from their fellow students – maximum one song per songwriter

There are Three Strands to the judging process;

the creative worth of the songs is judged by a Play It Strange panel

the quality of the recording, performances and album artwork etc is judged by a music industry panel

the success of the business unit in marketing and selling the album is judged by the Young Enterprise Scheme judging panel.

*The winner of the joint marking of Part 1 and Part 2 - will receive the Rockshop Album of the Year Award.
