FIRST PLACE ANNOUNCED
CONGRATULATIONS
to Petra Bullock from Takapuna Grammar for her song ‘Scarlet’
Matariki Songwriting Competition judge Tama Waipara listened extensively to the “rich talent” of the finalists, looking “specifically at the relevance of the writing to Matariki and the links therein”. He chose Petra Bullock and her song ‘Scarlet’ for her ”sophistication of ideas and interesting lyrical approach”.
Petra Bullock performed at the official Marariki Festival launch at the Mangere Arts Centre Thursday 14th June and will be performing at several other events along with other finalists throughout the festival.

About Matariki Songwriting Competition:
Students were asked to write a song that “celebrates Matariki (the Maori New Year)
- what Matariki means to you, your family and your community.
The lyrics could be in Te Reo Maori, English or be bilingual.
Matariki 2011
Auckland Secondary School Students were invited to enter their song into the inaugural competition that inspires a celebration of Matariki.
